Waiting for medical test results can be unnerving, but these tips can help you relax
As much as we try to make CT scans, MRIs, mammograms, and other important medical exams as stress-free as possible, we realize that it’s not always easy for patients to remain calm. In a previous blog, we discussed how to relieve stress during an MRI procedure, which will help you on the day of the scan. But what about the hours, days, and weeks after the procedure? What about the time you have between the test and actually getting the results?
Let’s take a look at how you can manage stress while waiting for your crucial test results…
Think about today
The test is taken and there is nothing you can do about it now. You might as well take a “carpe diem” attitude and get the most from today. The first and possibly most important step to relieving stress when waiting for test results is to shift your focus on today. With so much looming ahead, this is obviously not easy, but it can be very useful for the next few stress relievers.
Do something you enjoy
Now that you are thinking about today, find an activity you love and do it. When’s the last time you went fishing or tended to your garden? Maybe you want to work on a craft or art project. Make it a priority to be active and you won’t have time to worry and stress.
Get some exercise
According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise can lower anxiety and even relieve mild depression. You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete, just get out for a walk, jog, or bike ride. Do some light lifting at home or follow along with a short, simple workout video on YouTube. There are few things as good for your mind, body, and spirit as exercise.
Take a trip
Sometimes getting away is the best remedy for stress, and you don’t have to fly to Turks and Caicos. Take a trip to a state park you’ve always wanted to see or a museum you’ve been meaning to visit. You can take a weekend, a single night, or just get away for the day. It will be hard to stress out over test results when you are on a miniature vacation—and being out in nature has been prove to reduce anxiety and restore a sense of peace.
Schedule your return appointment as early as possible
Sitting around all day will only tempt you to stew and stress. If you can, try scheduling the appointment in the morning and see the results as soon as you can. This will reduce waiting time and, if needed, will help you start a game plan for treatment as soon as possible.
Surround yourself with friends and family
Positivity is contagious. Before, during, and after your testing, a support group is essential. Who in your life makes you feel energized, optimistic, and rejuvenated? Surround yourself with the company of positive, reassuring people and you’ll be able to keep the attitude you need during your entire wait.
